Emax : Operating System Versions
Overview
The Emax was released with an OS very similar to the Emulator II. However it wasn't long before upgrades were needed to fix a long list of bugs and to provide a range of new and useful features.
Non - HD Models (pre SE) OS 2.0 The initial launch OS release of 13th October 1986
OS 2.3
Launched 27th October 1986, just two weeks after the initial release.
OS 3.0 This version was released on 16th December 1986, and it provides lots of bug fixes and a few new features. It came with a new OS PROM (Version
B) - this is not essential for all the improvements.
- INC/DEC navigation improved
- Support for EEPROM hardware - old Emax's need a new EPROM for this to work
- Transpose works with key number
- Arpeggiator starts immediately
- Samples can be reversed
- Arpeggiator has added modes
- Sequencer improved
- Key audition feature added
- Sample rate viewable
- MIDI analyser added
- Slider interaction bug fixed
- Bad loop bug fixed
- MIDI/RS422 bug fixed
- 25 other bug fixes !
OS 3.1 This version was released on 12th March 1987, and it provides some minor
improvements.
- Preset change over MIDI in Supermode is ignored if the track is empty
- MIDI "all notes off" recognised in Supermode
- Crash fixed when lots of MIDI data received
- Sequencer memory message fixed
- Crash fixed when primary and secondary notes are played and MIDI overflow is on
- Combine function fixed to stop voice detruction
OS 3.2 This version was released on 10th April 1987, not all the additional features are
known, but we suspect it added CDROM support. However that might have been only released as OS 3.2 CD in December 1987. It is the final production release for non HD/SE models.
- CDROM support for the OMI CDROM Player
HD Models (pre SE) OS 1.0 The first production HD OS release, available from 17th July 1986. This sounds inaccurate as the HD model wasn't announced until Summer 87 NAMM.
OS 1.1 Released
on 10th April 1987, this release probably includes all the non HD OS improvements listed above. This is the final HD OS release (pre SE).
SE Models (HD and non - HD) SE OS 1.1 and SE HD 1.1 This version adds all the SE functions for either a non - HD or an HD model .It was released in
Spring 1988 as a chargable upgrade.
- Spectrum Interpolation Synthesis
- Digital Signal Processing (change sample rate and pitch)
- Stack Preset Model
- Load HD Bank from MIDI
- CDROM support for the OMI CDROM Player
- MIDI Preset Change Receive On/Off
- Linear Digital Taper curve rather than exponential
- Global MIDI channel set
- Finer Resolution of Velocity to Pitch
- Expanded Delay Times on the envelopes
- VCA Envelope Response
- Channel Output Volume trims stored to EPROM
Plus Models
OS 1.0 The production OS update for the SCSI upgrade, launched in mid 1989. There is just one major difference, the SCSI ID for bank loads can be set by pressing and holding the TRANSPOSE key whilst pressing the numeric key of the
external SCSI drive ID.
