ESI-32 : Internal SCSI Drives
Installing an Internal Drive It is possible to upgrade
the ESI-32 with an internal 3.5" SCSI hard drive or removable drive, in place of the standard floppy drive. You will obviously lose the use of the floppy drive. Upgrade to ESI OS 3.02 first, we have
experienced problems with earlier software.
The installation procedure is as follows:
- Decide which drive you want to fit. An internal SCSI Zip 100 is the best option as it requires little power and is quiet.
However you can fit an internal hard drive, although you may exceed the power capabilities of the ESI-32, and find it over heats. Remember the formatting limits of your OS version.
- You need a short 50 pin - 50 pin 2 connector internal SCSI cable (12" preferred), your chosen drive and a power
adapter only if you are using a hard disk. The adapter is a standard PC floppy to hard drive power adapter.
- Power off the ESI-32 and open up the case.
- Check the ESI-32 has the factory SCSI card fitted to the rear panel
- On the SCSI card there is a spare internal 50-pin SCSI connector (CN3) to which you will attach an internal SCSI cable.
- Disconnect the floppy drive interface cable from the motherboard, disconnect the power cable at the drive end, undo the 4x mounting screws in the base of the ESI-32, and
and carefully remove the drive.
- Install your new hard drive or removable drive, using the same mounting location. Check that its has SCSI termination
on, and that the SCSI ID matches your setup. Do not use either the ESI-32's internal ID (sometimes 0) or the ID intended for a Mac (7).
- Connect the drive to the ex-floppy drive power cable, using an adapter if necessary.
- Connect up the SCSI cable to CN3 on the SCSI board, with the red stripe of the cable aligned to pin 1 of CN3. The pin number is marked on the SCSI board.
- Close the case
- Power on and format the new drive !
