SI2000 : Upgrades & Add Ons

Factory Upgrades The E-mu Systems factory still provide a range of upgrades, even though they are rather expensive..

SCSI Drives The most popular upgrade after some new memory is a SCSI device. The ESI2000 will interface to a wide range of external devices including Hard Disk, Magnetic Optical, Removables and CDROM's. Check the 1995 ESI-32 compatibility list for details of older drives, and the more recent ESI2000 list. However these lists are out of date and even new 4GB SCSI drives will be unavailable soon. You are probable safe with Seagate or IBM hard drives, Iomega removables and Toshiba and Plextor CDROM's. However test before buying whenever possible.

Drive Formatting Internal and external hard drives and removable media need to be formatted using the following procedure:

  • Go to Master/Global, #7 (Disk Utilities)
  • #6 (Format Disk)
  • Choose the Zip drive, press 'Enter'
  • Press '8' on the keypad
  • Then press 'Yes'.

This will install the File System on the hard drive and not do a complete format. Note: This is the only method that will work with the Iomega Zip drive.

Attempting to do a normal disk format may cause the Zip cartridge to be unrecognized by the ESI. Upon doing this you will have to run Norton utilities via a MAC or PC to recover the cartridge).

   ESI2000 Drive Compatibility (1999) - 17KB

   ESI-32 SCSI Information - 69KB

Memory Upgrades The ESI2000 has two SIMM sockets which take 72-pin (70ns or faster) RAM. The SIMM's should be installed in matched pairs:

  • 2 x  4 MB
  • 2 x 16 MB
  • 2 x 64 MB

They can be parity or non-parity. Do not try 8 or 32 MB SIMM's, like most E-mu Systems samplers, the ESI-4000 will not recognise them. Use low profile SIMM's if you want to upgrade to TURBO status in the future, otherwise the SIMM's will block the upgrade card.

If you fill one slot only with a RAM SIMM, use slot 1. RAM will not be detected if it is only installed in slot 2. If you install two different size RAMs, install the LARGER size SIMM in slot 1. The SMALLER sized RAM should be installed in slot 2. When you install two different size RAM, your total amount of RAM will be the capacity of slot 1 plus HALF of the capacity of slot 2. For example, if you install a 64MB SIMM in slot 1 and a 16MB RAM in slot 2, you will have 72MB of total memory.

Digital I/O The ESI2000 can be upgraded with a Digital Interface Board (p/n 6210) which provides SPDIF I/O, at 32, 44.1 and 48kHz. It costs $200.00.

Turbo Kit This kit adds new features and functionality to your ESI2000 sampler, for $495 (p/n 6215). Easily installed, this upgrade kit contains new software and hardware enhancements, including six additional outputs, 18 new filters, new DSP functions and twin 24-bit stereo effects processors. You must have low profile SIMM's for this upgrade to fit inside the ESI-2000.

Taking Care When Upgrading A last note of warning. The ESI2000 does not have a cover for the internal power supply. This means that you could stick your hand in there and get a powerful shock that would end you musical career, especially if plugged in. The capacitors on the power supply will hold a charge even if the unit is unplugged. This means E-mu Systems cannot recommend a user install the memory themselves. It is not user installable and you should have a authorized service center do it. If you do choose to install it yourself be very careful and do not touch anything on the left side of the unit where the power supply is. Be careful !!
