Sample Design : Modern Editors
Overview The latest software is far richer in functionality than
the early sample editors developed between 1985 - 1995. The increase in personal computing power (over 100 fold) has led to onboard DSP effects without the need for a dedicated DSP sound card. The core of these sample editors is stereo
audio editing, with sampling as an aditional minor feature. There are three main contenders for the top slot, however all of them are excellent. Support for vintage samplers is via generic MIDI or SCSI sample dump.
Steinberg With the arrival of Windows 95 Steinberg began to develop new software for audio editing. Wavelab was launched in the mid 1990's at Version 1.0 with basic stereo sound editing. In version 2.0 sampler support arrived, and a number of modern samplers are now supported. The latest Version 3.0 adds even more features but the sampler support remains the same (ESI, E4,Ultra).

Sonic Foundry Founded in 1991 in Wisconsin, Sonic Foundry introduced Sound Forge for Windows. Now at Version 4.5 this is excellent software for Sample Designers, with real time loop tuning, MP3, G2 and SD and WAV support, as well as SCSI and MIDI sample dump support.

Bias The crown for the best Mac sample editior has now moved on from Digidesign to Bias, and their Peak VST software. Now at version 2.5 this software
offers powerful features (Ultra SCSI sample dump transfer) although the control interface is not to everyones liking (black buttons on a black background !).
Awave
Whilst not specifically a sample editor, this software has matured into a high value sample converter and editor...
