Emax : Sample Library

Sound Libraries A large sound library for the Emax was developed during the mid - late 1980's by E-mu Systems and other third parties.

Factory Library E-mu Systems continued developing a high quality sample library for the Emax through out the mid - late 1980's. Initially they were based on familiar Emulator II sounds, but they also produced a number of completely new sounds (including samples of the new Japanese digital synthesizers- the DX7 and D50). They were $12.95 each.

Then in 1988 they digitally transferred a number of sample banks from the legendary EIII - as the Gold Series (ZD822 - ZD855). These samples range from some of the EIII orchestral samples to new synthesiser sounds. They were originally $15.95 each.

Sadly this entire 160+ diskette library is no longer available from E-mu Systems, BUT you can buy a PC format CD with many of these sample banks in EMX format. See the sidebar for details.

These samples can be downloaded as EMX files - more »

Northstar This Emax sample library is still available on floppy diskettes. At 300 disks - this is a very useful resource. Prices range from $9 - $20 depending on the quantity ordered.

Kid Nepro Have a 46 diskette library for the Emax, which is still available at $350 or as individual diskettes.

MidimouseMIDIMouse - Premiere Collection #1
A collection of 19 diskettes were available at $24.95 each. The 10 disk "Premiere" Collection contained: Piano, Bass, Master Strings, Orchestral Classics, Antnthology, Composers Toolkit, Drum Kit, Percussion, Cosmos. MIDIMouse was based in Oregon, and the samples were available for the EII as well as other samplers.

K-Muse A variety of diskettes was available in nice white plastic cases, including an Alembic Bass (which was a bit out of tune !), however we have no further details on this quality library.

PSL A collection of 64 Roland D50 samples was available as a 10 diskette set - $69.95. A layered synthesizer set of samples as a 6 diskette set was $59.95.

Softworx  A massive 140 diskette collection was available at $9.95 each, or 10 disketees at $74.95, or 50 diskettes at $225. A 21 diskette effects set was $140.

Sound Hound
A 2 diskettes collection was available in 1989 at $14.95 each, and a demo diskette was available at $3.50.

 EMX Guide

Emax DisketteThe Emax samples on the CD are in EMX format for the PC. This means the Emax sample diskette has been converted on a PC to a special EMX file format.

To use these EMX files you need a copy of the EMX program for the PC. It is a DOS program which must run under DOS not Windows 95/98/NT. It reads
Emax I and Emax II diskettes from a PC diskette drive, and loads the OS and samples to a PC disk drive. It can also write and format Emax diskettes.
EMX does not work on all PC's, and it must be run with DOS.

 Instructions

* Download the EMX program
* Format a new DS/DD
   diskette in your Emax
* Boot your PC from DOS
* Launch EMX
* Insert the blank Emax
   formatted diskette
* Create the Emax Sample
   Bank on this diskette
* Read this diskette into
  your Emax and play!
