AM Sub Modules - Utility PCB's
Overview Here is a collection of usefil "utility" PCB's that can help any Synth DIYer complete his/her project. We have called them Sub Modules - enjoy!
Push Button Sub Module(PBSM)
The usual switch type for analog synth modules is the toggle, as it is easy to mount and connect. Square or round momentary push buttons with in-built LED's are used on commercial synths, but they are a bit more difficult to use with analog modules.
Not any longer! The PBSM circuit supports the control of four analog module features via momentary push buttons. The push buttons are easily available and are the same as used on many E-mu, Oberheim and SCI synths of the late
1970's. The push button controls a simple CMOS flip-flop which toggles a DG403 analog switch on and off. The switch is DPDT and can handle audio or control signals up to +/- 15V. A 3mm LED within the button provides visual feedback of the
switch state, or it can be jumpered to be controlled externally (e.g. LFO rate).
The PBSM consists of 2 PCB's mounted back-to-back, with the switches mounted on the outer board and the logic mounted on the inner board. Four switches
are mounted horizontally, next to each other, so only one panel cut out is needed in addition to the 2 mounting holes.
Signal Level Sub Module (SLSM) This sub module provides visual indication of analog signal levels and
whether it has overloaded. Its a simple circuit based on the LM3916 chip driving 10 3mm LED's arranged vertically (7 green, 1 blue 2 red).
Transistor Matching Sub Module (TMSM)
Many older analog designs needed matched NPN or PNP transistors. Here is a simple PCB that enables transistors to be easily matched with a DVM and +/-15V power supply.
Power Supply Sub Module (PSSM)
This is a simple 500mA +/-15V power supply PCB that can power 10 or more modules. We use it for our smaller cabinets and for our test power supply on the workbench. It can be trimmed accurately to +/-15V and it includes the usual MOTM style 0.156" headers for power supply connection to modules.
