AM2510 Module - Eµ 8 Position Address Generator (8PAG)

Overview This module is a clone of the 8 Position Address Generator module in the Eµ Systems Modular Sequencer. It is a very close replica with only minor changes to use modern components and to add some new features. The 8PAG takes a clock input and translates it into 3-bit binary code for driving the VSOU and other modules. It does not create CV's, but it does have some neat control features.

Original Circuit The original design dates back to 1974, and the clone is based on the original schematics (thanks Riley) from January 1975 (version 7) and the 1977 parts list. The module core is a 74C193 Up/Down Binary Counter that generates the 3-bit (BCD) binary code which is output on BINARY OUTPUT.

The counter can be clocked up or down, or held, from the UP, DOWN and HOLD input jacks. The counter position can also be preset to anywhere between positions 1 to 8 from a set of front panel momentary action push buttons (and jack inputs). The preset function is created by a 4532 8-input priority encoder. The module has borrow and carry functions, so that 8PAG's can be chained together to form longer sequences, these functions are available on the BORROW and CARRY jacks.

The 8 position steps are also available individually as +5V outputs and the position of the counter is shown on 8 LED's. These functions are created by a 74C42 BCD to Decimal counter. The outputs are inverted and buffered by transistors.

AM Circuit The AM circuit is exactly the same except for some upgrades and enhancements:

  • Use of HC CMOS chips for the counters
  • Resistor DIL arrays to save space and speed the build
  • RESET function to reset the counter (front panel button and jack)
  • INHIBIT function to set all outputs to 0V (front panel button and jack)
  • Emulator II style buttons rather than round push buttons

The circuit has been split over two PCB's to make it easier to build and to fit all the components in. The PCB next to the panel holds the 74HC42 counter, LED and step transistor buffers. The PCB above this holds the main 74HC193 counter. The Emulator II push buttons are held on Am9010 PCB's.

The front panel is similar to the original, although I have fitted it into a narrow panel and laid out the controls rather better (IMHO).

There is no trimming. The module only needs +5V for the CMOS logic, which is generated on the digital P from the usual MOTM format Power input.

Front Panel The front panel  is a standard AM design, 90mm wide and 4U high, with black lettering. Controls knobs are standard Eµ Modular designs.

Build History The schematic was transferred into Eagle CAD in the summer of 2005 when I was on holiday in the Peak District (UK). The circuit has been laid out over 2 80x100mm PCB's and a prototype will be tested in the Spring of 2006.
